  • He Went to Jared!

OMFG! Screw you Jared! Nobody likes you! Lol!

Seriously though, why on earth are there so many diamond commercials as it gets closer to Valentines day?

    Every kiss begins with Kay!

Yay, good for you, I'm glad you know that every kiss begins with a k. Spelling is an important part of relationships. You don't want to be dating a dumbass.

All sarcasm aside, people really shouldn't fall victim to these adds that try to portray that you can only love your significant others if you are willing to shell out thousands of dollars on a few sparkly rocks or other materialistic things.

I think that JLo said it best:

Think you gotta keep me iced
    You don't
Think I'm gonna spend your cash
    I wont
    Even if you were broke
My love don't cost a thing

And that's how it should be. End of story.

  • Lana Lang-Smallville Edition

This post is going to seem remarkably shallow in follow up to my sister's last post, which touches on a controversial topic that is relevant to society as a whole. No, this post, will be nothing like that, but it is something I need to vent about nonetheless.

I am going to complain about the character Lana Lang in my favorite show, Smallville. That's right folks, I'm complaining about a fictional character.

I am a dork and admit it freely. I love comics and superheroes. Mostly, I love Batman and Superman. (Batman we will save for another time).

So, when Smallville came out eight seasons ago, I was thrilled. I knew that the character Lana Lang would play a role, after all this was teenage Clark Kent. Also, I accepted that the storyline would deviate from the Superman basics.

I embraced many of those changes: I love the show's original character of Chloe Sullivan. I even love in this most recent season that she married Jimmy Olsen (I always thought Jimmy deserved more action). I even enjoyed seeing Lex Luthor as a part of Clark's Smallville years.

However, I hate Smallville's Lana Lang. The show has made me hate the fictional character of Lana Lang with a deep passion that boils every time I see her appear in an episode of Smallville or any other of the Superman related shows floating around (yes I watch the cartoon).

I am a die hard Clark & Lois fan, but I knew going into Smallville as a fan that this would not be about Lois. That Lana would play Clark's love interest. However, when Lois appeared several seasons later and Lana continued to be a soul, sucking bitch who proceeds to marry Lex Luthor, I saw no point in continuing to trying to convince fans that Lana was the woman for Clark.

When she left at the end of season 7, I was happy (even happier when Lois consoled Clark), but now here we are half way through season 8 and the wench is back. And, the writers jump from having Clark and Lois (who I remind you is his soul mate and the woman he does marry) almost kiss, to Clark kissing Lana and going on about being with her again.

I want to grab the show writers and shake them and scream: LANA LANG DOES NOT BELONG WITH CLARK KENT!!!

But, since I can't grab them, I wrote this post instead.

  • Discrimination!

First, I think I should probably start this post off with a nice little warning. If you can't handle reading about controversial topics, then DON'T read this post.

I don't claim to be all-knowing, and my words and opinions are most definitely not law. I haven't been on this earth for much more than two decades, but I know what I've seen and experienced. Based off of what I have experienced myself, I can feel pretty comfortable in my statement that racism and other prejudices are a long way from being eradicated from the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

Now when I say racism... please don't be naive to think that I mean prejudice against black people. They're not the only people who have been discriminated against in our time. I mean racism against ALL races. Black, white, yellow, red, brown, blue, purple, pink, you name it, i mean it! (Ok, so I'm being a little facetious with the blue, purple, and pink, but you know what I mean.)

No, you did not read wrong. I believe that all of the aforementioned races are discriminated against. INCLUDING white people. I think that some people don't realize that white people can be, and in fact are, discriminated against.

Those of you who have either gone to college or have ever applied to college. Take a minute and think back to the questions that you were asked on your applications. I don't know about everywhere, but the colleges I applied to all asked two very, unimportant in my opinion, questions. They asked you what your race/ethnicity was, and they asked for your gender.

Now, I ask you... WHY is that information important to get into college? The answer: IT'S NOT! At least the last time I checked, even though I'd love to say it, being a girl doesn't mean you're smarter than boys, and Asians aren't smarter than Indians, even though a lot of great technologies come from Asian countries. The only reason colleges include those questions is because of a little thing they call Affirmative Action.

I don't pretend to be completely knowledgable on exact definisions, so I'll show you the infamous wikipedia's definition for affirmative action. "The term affirmative action refers to policies that take gender, race, or ethnicity into account in an attempt to promote equal opportunity."

Asking for somebody's race, gender, or ethnicity on a college application doesn't promote equal opportunity. In fact, I think it promotes inequality. Because of these policies that try to promote equal opportunity, colleges are forced to accept certain percentages of non white students. So that means, you could be at the top of your class, involved in tons of extra curricular activities, and be more than qualified to get into a certain college, but a person of mexican descent, who may  not be as qualified to gain admintance to the same college, has a better chance of getting accepted than a white person. Hell, even white females have a better chance than a white male who is equally qualified. I'd like somebody to tell me that's fair and equal, without having their nose grow a few inches, Pinnochio style.

Whether anybody wants to believe it or not, the white man is now descriminated against. Is it as bad as what other races have experienced? No, I don't think so, but if equality is what we're aiming for, this definitely isn't it.

What colleges need to do, is completely throw out those two questions, and even develop a new system, where instead of putting your name on the application that they review, they should assign applicant numbers to people so that when the people in charge of admissions review the applications, they aren't biased by race or gender. Being a female myself, I know that there's a chance that the reason I made it into the college I'm currently attending, could be partially because I'm a female, and while it worked to my advantage, it's not right. It would be nice to know that you were chosen based solely on your merits, afterall, isn't that what is supposed to be judged when you try to get into college?

Someday, I'd love to live in a country that I can be proud to say promotes true equality, but still embraces diversity.

  • I'm sorry, was that supposed to be scary?

I was just curious as to whether anyone else has been disappointed in the quality (or lack of) recent horror movies. When I watch a scary movie, I want it to make me have nightmares for a least the next two days. I want to be so frightened that a nightlight is a must.

Today's 'scary' movies just do not provide me with that level of fear inducing entertainment. Perhaps its because I've grown up and realized that if a fit athelete runs ten miles down the road away from the slow walking madman; he isn't going to magically appear behind them when they funble with the keys. Or, perhaps as an adult, I find it hard to cry out in alarm at knife wielding doll (why didn't anyone just punt the little bugger or pick him up and give him 'shaken doll syndrom').

The last scary movie I paid to see was the recent release Unborn. I had high hopes that I would leave the theater and go home and have scary nightmares about freaky blue eyed little boys, but alas no nightmares. The biggest problem is the writers of these movies are skipping the part of the creative process where they make the plot somewhat believeable. There were so many flaws in the basic concept of Unborn there was no way to be frightened.

A non-spoiler flaw was the part of the plot where the female lead was targeted by the demon because she was a twin. The problem with this, the writers went on to add that twins are mirros. Well, I would have believed this if the female had been an IDENTICAL twin, but she was a fraternal twin (who are not mirrors or one another).

I want a movie where the writers thoroughly thought about the script they are writing so that reason does not win out over the heebie jeebies.

That being said, I'll keep paying for a ticket or picking up the latest release at Blockbuster, but I'll keep hoping for a real, pee-my-pants, horror movie.

  • There is nothing to talk about...

Remember that Bonnie Raitt song, 'Something to Talk About?'

If you don't, I'll recap. The song is essentially about two friends, who have been told they are more than just friends by everyone else. So, they decide to give everyone something to talk about. In this case, there was more...

...but sometimes, there is just friendship.

I think on occasion, when it comes to friendships between members of the opposite sex, that sometimes people talk entirely too much when there is nothing to talk about.

Everyone knows what I am talking about: you have a friend, in my case a guy friend, who you like to hang out with, whether it be going to catch a baseball game or just grabbing some wings together. There's nothing there, except friendship.

But, since friendship is not spicy enough gossip, people have to start spreading rumors that really you're an item. These gossip mongers never stop to take into consideration the damage that can be done to friendships with their unfounded words. I have watched boyfriends and girlfriends break up over 'friendships' because of these lies.

I've also personally experienced what happens when the rumors force the friend to chose between their significant other and the friendship. Everyone loses in this situation.

So please, before you go talking about a guy and a girl, who are friends, make sure your facts are straight because there is a good chance there is nothing to talk about at all.
